The Wagner group was for the longest time secret, the few available public bits of information provided by Western intelligence services. Its mere existence was denied and members were held to many rules, including a total ban on symbols associated with the Wagner group, which was eventually lifted. Wagner found its origins in the first Invasion of Ukraine, in 2014, when it was founded as a private military company by the Oligarch Yevgeny Prigozhin and a veteran of the russian military, Dmitry Utkin. Its members were veterans of the russian forces, wearing no identifying markers. The russian and pro-russian press gave these fighters the nickname “polite men”, a term which became part of Wagner culture.
Several privately made or purchased patches commemorate the term.

This patch was recovered by third Assault brigade during May 2023 in Bakhmut and was previously part of the "Kriegszeugen" Exhibition by Agile Aid.
