An intriguing Spanish military helmet with a history that ultimately brought it into Ukrainian service.

The internal Spanish label reads “Nombre / Empleo / Talla”—name, rank or appointment, and size—and identifies it as medium, suitable for approximately 56–58 cm. A faint marking inside the shell appears to read “MARTE 03/95,” consistent with a Spanish MARTE III composite ballistic helmet introduced during the 1990s.

The helmet is fitted with a German Flecktarn-pattern camouflage cover. This would not have been its original Spanish configuration and was almost certainly added later, creating a particularly interesting mixture of European military equipment adapted for service in Ukraine.

ITS JOURNEY TO UKRAINE

The precise history of this helmet is unknown. How it travelled from Spanish military service into the hands of a Ukrainian soldier would undoubtedly be a fascinating story, but unfortunately that part of its journey was never recorded.

The helmet formed part of a collection of older equipment donated to Ukraine UK Aid by a Ukrainian soldier known to our friend Olena. After being issued with newer and more effective equipment, he gave his superseded helmet, body armour and other kit to Olena, who subsequently passed them to us.

We cannot confirm when the helmet entered Ukraine, which organisation originally supplied it or how long it remained in Ukrainian service. It may have arrived through one of the many European surplus or aid channels that have equipped Ukrainian personnel, but no documentary evidence accompanies it.

CONDITION

This is a genuinely used military helmet and is offered in the condition shown. The Flecktarn cover is faded, dirty and worn, with fraying and marks from prolonged use. The internal suspension, straps and leather components show considerable age, wear, staining and deterioration.

Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description.
