About the 10th Mountain Assault Brigade
- Specialization: It is an elite unit specifically trained for mountain warfare operations.
- History: Formed in late 2015, the brigade is based in Kolomyia, Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast. It has been heavily involved in major defensive operations, including the battles for Mariupol, Bakhmut, and Siversk.
- Traditions: To honor their mountain roots, brigade members have historically performed climbs to peaks like Hoverla (Ukraine's tallest mountain) to commemorate fallen soldiers.
The design of the patch incorporates several key elements that represent the brigade's specialised role and national identity:
- "ЕДЕЛЬВЕЙС" (Edelweiss): The text at the top is the brigade's official honorific title, granted by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on February 14, 2023.
- The Edelweiss Flower: Though simplified on this specific low-visibility version of the patch, the edelweiss is a traditional international symbol for mountain troops. It symbolizes resilience, purity, and courage, as the flower only grows in harsh, high-altitude environments.
- Central Trident (Tryzub): The blue symbol is the Tryzub, the national coat of arms of Ukraine. It is an ancient sign of the Rurik dynasty and represents freedom, independence, and the invincibility of the Ukrainian people.
• • Shield Shape: The emblem is set on a shield, which is the standard heraldic base for Ukrainian military unit patches.
