This patch displays the Star of Life, a universally recognized blue, six-pointed star that serves as a symbol for Emergency Medical Services (EMS).
The Star of Life is composed of two primary components, each with its own significance:
The Six Branches: Each arm of the star represents a specific task within the EMS system:
Detection, Reporting, Response, On-scene care, Care in transit, Transfer to definitive care
The Rod of Asclepius: The center features a staff entwined by a single serpent, a symbol from Greek mythology representing healing and medicine.
This symbol is predominantly used on:
EMS Personnel Uniforms: Often seen as embroidered patches on the shoulders of paramedics and EMTs.
Vehicles: Displayed on ambulances and other emergency response vehicles to denote their medical purpose.
Medical Equipment: Found on first aid kits, trauma bags, and other lifesaving gear.
